Fire safety

Fires represent a serious hazard for ships, offshore units and high speed craft. Many studies have shown that fire is the second largest hazards for crew and passengers on ships. Foundering due to collision, grounding or hull structural failure is generally considered being the largest hazard.

Where authorised by the flag state, DNV will issue certificates based on international regulations like the SOLAS Convention, the MODU Code and the HSC Code. DNV participates in IMO and IACS (association of major classification societies) in order to keep the international legislations updated and conclude upon interpretations when needed.

Engine room fire
Oil leakage hitting hot spots on engines is the most common cause of engine room fires on board ships. According to DNV casualty statistics, more than 60% of all engine room fires have been initiated by a hot spot. más
Phase out of Halon
IMO has prohibited new Halon installations from 1994, but accepts existing Halon systems installed prior to that date. Phase out of Halon is consequently an issue for each Flag State, with the phase out for EU flagged ships as the most notable programme. más
Cargo fires on container carriers
Container vessels are regarded as a relatively safe ship type. However, a series of major fires in cargo areas of such vessels have lately caused some concern. más
